Safety First: A Few Ways to Avoid Crashes

Safety First: A Few Ways to Avoid Crashes

Learning to drive is an exciting endeavour. The moment you get your license, a whole new world of freedom can open up to you. However, driving can also be extremely dangerous if you do not understand how to stay safe and alert. Here are a few ways that all new drivers can do their best to avoid crashes and other driving dangers.
Don’t Get Distracted
One of the most common dangerous mistakes that drivers make is distracted driving. When you think about distracted driving, you probably think about texting and using your phone, but there are many other things that can also cause you to lose sight of the road and possibly cause a crash. For example, putting on makeup or eating could cause you to lose focus. Try to avoid any activities that cause you to move your eyes away from the road. This is especially important as you first start driving on your own.

Never Drive Under the Influence
Everyone knows that drink driving is extremely dangerous, as there have been many studies and awareness campaigns on the topic in recent years. However, other things can also cause impaired driving. Many prescription drugs, for example, can cause drowsiness or dizziness, which can impair you just as much as alcohol. You already know to never drive under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, but you also need to make sure to check your prescriptions as well.
Understand the Rules of the Road
While you may have initially learned the rules of the road to pass your driving test, you should be aware that every time you drive, your knowledge of traffic laws will be tested. Not understanding simple things, such as right-of-way laws, can lead to fatal accidents. Make sure you have a deep understanding of the traffic laws. If you don’t yet have your license, make sure you choose a good driving school to help you learn them.
Get Your Rest
Driving while tired can cause you to have slowed reactions, which can lead to dangerous crashes. Don’t get behind the wheel if you’re feeling exhausted. Take the time to get a nap, or get someone else to drive.
Maintain your Car
Your car should be regularly inspected and maintained by a mechanic you trust. Malfunctions can cause crashes or leave you stranded, so preventative maintenance is important. If you are buying a car, do your research and have a mechanic take a look at the vehicle before you make the purchase. This can help you avoid cars with problems. It takes a little more time to get a second opinion, but this precaution can help you avoid ending up with a lemon.
If you follow these few tips, you should be on your way to becoming a safer and more informed driver.
